NFA recognizes and Support PNG Fisheries Cooperatives Minimize

The National Fisheries Authority of Papua New Guinea has recognized PNG fisheries Co-corporatives with Freezer Truck and seed capital basically to support them to actively participate as business entity. Given the transportation problem and market access a freezer truck will be used to ease some of the burdens of market access and other logistical problems. 

NFA is promoting down stream processing and onshore processing which will allow PNGeans to participate and benefit from the fisheries sector.  Managing Director of National Fisheries Authority Mr Sylvester Pokajam said that NFA is fully committed to support and promote local participation for the development of fisheries sector and as such NFA has recognised  and supported artisanal fishermen/women and fish farmers with a truck each at the selected areas.  

The National Fisheries Authority has recognized the Kokopo Co-operatives with a 3.2 tonne Freezer truck and other equipment worth of K96, 000.00 and seed capital of more than K4000 to the Kokopo Fisheries Cooperatives last week. A total of more than K1000 000 has been given to Kokopo Fisheries Cooperative. In a small reception Ms Welete Wararu, Executive Manager for Provincial Support and Industry Development when handed over the cheque told the people that NFA has recognized East New Britain with funding basically to increase the artisanal and semi commercial fisheries activities in the province.  

Ms Wararu said since 2005 NFA has assisted fisheries groups, fish farmers and small to medium enterprise through project development fund (PDF) throughout in PNG and ENB is one of them. In 2010 NFA has further set out to assist the model marketing cooperatives to get involve in fish buying and selling as a regular business entity. As such NFA has already facilitated Cooperatives with freezer truck and support them with office equipment.
