Madang Fish Market and Jetty construction Ground Breaking Ceremony Minimize

The Rehabilitation of Madang Market Project is part of the government’s coastal fisheries development, which will be funded by the grant assistance from the Government of Japan at the cost of K26 million equivalent. The Government of PNG’s counterpart contribution will come from both NFA and the Madang Provincial Government. NFA’s contribution to this Project in 2015 is around K2 million.

Job Pomat, NFA Board Chairman said that NFA through the support of other government agencies, in particular, the Department of National Planning and Monitoring, has maintained a productive working relationship with the JICA and OFCF over the years and that has resulted in a number of projects have been achieved in PNG. Mr Pomat said the JICA has developed the infrastructure of fisheries sector since 2006 and now PNG is positioned well especially the coastal provinces.

He said since the conclusion of the new bilateral fishing access arrangement in 2006, with the National Fisheries Authority, for fishing access of Japanese fishing fleets to fish in the Papua New Guinea’s EEZ, our fisheries cooperation have grown from strength to strength.

During the absence of the bilateral fishing access agreement between our countries, Papua New Guinea lost a lot of opportunities in terms of Japan’s official development assistance in the fisheries sector. The new bilateral fishing agreement marks the new fishing relationship that is characterized by mutual cooperation from both sides and generates economic development for both countries. Mr Pomat said PNG fishing access arrangement has further strengthened the strong bilateral relationship, which further increases and strengthens our opportunity to have access to various Japan’s development assistance

PNG government Praises JICA

Papua New Guinea government is very impressed with Japanese government’s assistance through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). PNG through the National Fisheries Authority Board thanked the people and Government of Japan for the continuous support to PNG’s development aspirations through the provision of the Japanese Official Development Assistance.

“I wish to specifically make a mention and recognize the Government of Japan for its support in the development of coastal fisheries sector in PNG”,  Mr Job Pomat, Board Chairman, National Fisheries Authority said.  Mr Pomat made this remarks whilst delivering a speech on behalf of the Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources, Hon Mao Zeming during the occasion of ground breaking ceremony for the construction of Madang Market and Jetty. The ground breaking ceremony was held on the 16th March 2015. The government of Japan through the JICA funded the construction of Madang Market and Jetty at cost of K26 million equivalent.
