FISHERIES MANAGEMENT

The Fisheries Management Group are primarily concerned with ensuring that fisheries of national or community significance are managed to obtain maximum benefit on a sustainable basis. This must take into account balanced views of fisheries science, environmental impact, social factors and economic development.
- Developing fisheries management plans for sustainable and economic
use of fisheries.
- Arranging the design, collection, processing, storage, reporting
and publication of information on resource and fisheries characteristics.
- Liasing with national and international agencies and organisations
to access research and development expertise and information.
- Working closely with Provincial and Industry Liaison to ensure
resource owners, developers and provincial governments understand
the requirements of relevant fisheries management plans.
- Approving, arranging or facilitating research required for
the development of fisheries.
Developing and regularly reviewing fisheries management plans
for all major fisheries that provide clear and enforceable management
guidelines.
- Establishing Fisheries Management Advisory Committees and actively
consulting with these and other industry groups to consider their
interests when developing fisheries management plans.
- Actively consulting with provinces and communities to consider
their interests when developing fisheries management plans.
- Developing a regional policy through Forum Fisheries Agency
for the control of purse seine fishing effort.
- Consulting with industry and having agreed guidelines on the
use of destructive fishing gear to avoid over fishing in the barramundi
fishery.
- Identifying and promoting viable sites and markets for prawn
and fish farming to potential investors.
- Establishing representative management advisory committees for
designated fisheries to provide NFA with advice on fishery matters.
