HOME KAVIENG COLLEGE COURSES OFFERED

Courses Offered

The College offers courses in two important areas of fisheries in PNG; the commercial and seafood stream. Each course is taught at three different levels and these are briefly explained hereafter.

Commercial Fisheries Operations (CFO) Courses
For fishing vessel crew, the 5 week CF01 course includes Marine Department recognised modules in safety and survival, first aid and fire fighting as well as competency standards in fishing and seafood handling. The course requires students to live in and includes high standards of discipline and fitness.

Following at least 18 months of sea time experience, crew can undertake the CF02 course (8 weeks) which will allow holders to command or operate machinery on smaller coastal fishing vessels or work as a watch keeper on large vessels. This follows on to the CF03 course (12 weeks), which requires additional sea time to be completed, and will allow for command of larger vessels within PNG’s 200 mile economic zone.

Post Harvest Operation (PHO) Seafood Courses
With new regulations in place for PNG seafood industry processors and exporters, the training of personnel has become increasingly important. The College has 3 new core programs in place and under development for pre-employment or industry-based seafood processing staff.

The PH01 course is a 3 week pre-employment or in-service course. The course is competency based and includes modules on handling seafood products, cleaning and sanitizing, working in the seafood industry, seafood spoilage, fish quality, seafood safety and HACCP.

The follow-on PH02 program is an in-service course, which extends the PH01 subject areas into more of a supervisory and quality control context. The PH03 course, which was first offered in 2002, focus on seafood plant supervision and management.

Small Fishing Operations
This course covers small vessel operations including small boat safety and fishing operations, basic navigation and seafaring skills, fishing gear and methods, quality fish handling, sanitation and hygiene, fisheries resource management and small engine maintenance and repair. The course is conducted over 2 weeks with an emphasis on spoken explanations, accompanied by drawing, diagrams, and hands on practical demonstration and participation in real fishing activities.

National/Provincial Courses and Programs
Observer Course
The college offers a 2 and 5 weeks basic training for observers to equip them with the important skills, tools and knowledge that will enable an observer to better perform his duties out at in the field; whether at port or out at sea.

Fisheries Officer Training Course
The college also provide quality training for fisheries officers at provincial level to improve or instil in them the important skills that they would require to facilitate their job.

HACCP
The college aspires to be able to run courses in Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) or assist the companies to put their HACCP plans in place and to ensure that they are up to the standard required.

Start Your Business in Fisheries Course
Working with the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) under a Department of Trade and Industry and Commonwealth Secretariat funded program, the College is playing a lead role in the development and delivery of a small fishing business management program which includes both business planning and business development. This course is usually run 3 to 4 times a year in Kavieng as well as other PNG maritime provinces.
