RELEASES 2005

This notice is to advise the prawn operators and the general public
that there will be a biological prawn trawl survey conducted in
the Gulf of Papua Prawn Fishery, from the 1st of 16th March 2005.
The biological survey will concentrate in the regions between the
mouth of the Fly River and Freshwater Bay. This will include trawls
in the restricted three-mile zone. The survey is funded by Australian
Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) & National
Fisheries Authority (NFA). NFA and Commonwealth Scientific Industrial
and Research Organization (CSIRO) will collaborate in the implementation
of this survey with the assistance of the prawn operators. This
survey is a follow up of last year’s biological survey and
would be the last survey conducted in the current ACIAR Prawn Project
in the Gulf of Papua Prawn Fishery.
The aim of this second biological survey is to establish the number
of juvenile banana prawns to the fishery, obtain information on
types of prawns, where they are found, size distribution and if
possible obtain an annual estimate of the catch rates and size composition
of prawns within the three miles restricted zone. This is in accordance
with the current Gulf of Papua Prawn Management Plan whereby a scientific
observer/research programmed may be set up to monitor the fishery.
It you have any queries in this regard, please contact Ms Luanah
Koren (prawn scientist) or Mr Augustine Mobiha (Fisheries Advisor)
on telephone 309 0444, fax: 320 2061 or email: lkoren@fisheries.gov.pg/amobiha@fisheries.gov.pg.
